What Matters Most—What Is Our Focus?
- Chris Bliss video (prompt to reflect on what our focus needs to be) http://video.google.com/videoplay?docid=4776181634656145640&pr=goog-sl
- Responses to the video and the question (what is our focus?)
- Amazing that his focus stayed on the balls (not on music/audience)
- How do we deal with additional “balls” thrown in
- Give self “permission” to focus (block other things for the moment) puts you in better frame of mind
- Meditative state, “in the zone” => better service to students to focus on task
- Communicate needs to each other to help support and collaborate
- “Mission” is the focus, the balls are just part of the process
- We have to figure out a way to manage tasks because PVCC is growing
- Can do much more collaboration to help each other meet our goals
- Movements are so in synch with the music => timing impeccably perfect => struck by how aligned the juggling was to the larger picture
- If you drill back up in collective work we do as a division and college, what are three goals? Can we concretely label them?
- Help kids be successful (athletically, academically, personal growth)
- Success is production (“show”), find three balls (support, service, synergy)
- iPlan, iLearn, iDo
- “Human Services” department (Maricopa gets hung up on process) => focus on humans, changing lives
- In business of “hope” => get students to believe in themselves
- Maybe two or three common things we all conscribe to, but “balls” look different in each office
- Helps create context (don’t focus on details that don’t directly affect students)
- Focus on how people are positively influenced by what we do
- Higher level thinking takes time away from direct service to students
- Dealing with details precludes ability to focus on bigger issues
- Going to try and spend more time at our meetings talking about bigger issues
