Welcome and Agenda Overview
  • Paul welcomed everyone to the meeting and then went over the agenda, asking for additional items as needed

Announcements
  • Paul D. recently returned from the Systems Thinking in Action Conference in Seattle, WA

    • Still trying to synthesize learning from the conference
    • Most striking “a ha!” moment: Single biggest contributor to world poverty => how we distribute food
    • Additional ideas:

      • Real systems thinkers are looking at things GLOBALLY
      • Power of learning is that we are preparing learners to tackle those problems/larger issues
      • Employers at business/IT => “green” certifications at college, businesses would send employees
      • Green collar jobs (solar panels, weatherizing homes)
      • Land Think Tank—divisions around the world look at how we use land resources and plan for future

  • Need to actively encourage participation of Native American students and employees (and KEEP them)
  • 11/20 SLC kicks off annual Adopt-a-Family with free pancake give-away
  • Relay for Life, 4/11-12/08, “Peoples of the World,” still recruiting committee members (entertainment, food/beverage, luminarias, sponsorship, survivorship), 11/29 official Kick Off in KSC208
    • Want to make this a PVCC-owned even this year => encourage participation

Updates
  • MCCCD Technology Fee Proposal
    • Fee specifically for technology use on campus (not per course=> every student pays a flat fee or per credit)
    • Looking at all difference colleges (CGCC currently has one)
    • Educause has survey—70% of community colleges have a technology fee, the three state universities have a technology fee, Puma Community College charged $2/credit hour, Cochise Community College charges a flat fee
    • Colleges who have student input in how the fees are implemented and spent have more support
    • Discussion and input for P.G.
    • Concerns
District’s allocation (what will it be and what will it be used for)
      • Per credit fee too much—PT charge one fee, FT charge another fee
      • Activity fee is currently built into our tuition ... should we add the technology fee to tuition, too?
      • Flat fee over 6 credits, unless technology-related class
      • Per usage printer fee
      • Students enrolled in multiple campuses=> how will these break out? By credit or %?
      • Can some of the dollars generated be used for assistive technology?
      • TCT team has Admin participation too?
  • College Reading and Learning Organization Conference (Rick Sheets, assumed presidency of this national organization)
    • Focused on student, staff, and organizational learning (Skip Downing and JoAnn Wright, speakers) => Systemic, sustainable programs for student success
  • 2007 CCSSE Findings Overview (Group Discussion)
    • Active and Collaborative Learning (Report Out)
      • Use CCSSE data to create learning outcomes
      • Large group of students asking questions about services we offer (FinAid)—beyond filling out forms as a result of student success class
      • Students with disabilities present to teacher prep classes
      • Having students help other students to learn about our services
      • How do we help students apply skills across a whole host of settings?
        • Counseling and Student Life offer classes using active and collaborative learning
        • Level III Emerging Leaders students work with faculty to provide a team-building presentation with students (low ropes course)
      • Learning takes place across campus=> What learning takes place for you?
        • Example: student challenging organization => How are we doing business?
        • Changed language when dealing with students who are struggling to learn about a given process—much more thoughtful when responding, i.e., ask the student “what do you think your options are?” ... in order to help student help him/herself
        • Try to contextualize where students are and what student responsibilities are with the expectation that students will be successful
        • Is it OK to say “where do you think you may go?” => change mindset so that it is OK to encourage students to become empowered (?)
        • Learning has to happen up front and then you can help students see and think critically for themselves
        • Assessing outcomes might not be the same for all measures (what is the goal and do “numbers” mean the same across all goals—no)
    • Support for Learners
      • Shifting paradigm from “holding hand” to “empowerment” as an independent learner
      • Valencia Community College at Student Success Conference => structure of all out of class services are designed to move students from dependent to independent learners => need to look at ways students can track improvement/learning over time
    • Will focus on other benchmarks at future meetings
    • Constantly ask self “how do I make this part of my work/plans?”
    • Independent of having to get help on how to learn to allow students to move to more complex learning => move from dependent to interdependent learner (language)

Career Services
  • Norma presented assessment best practice
  • Customer service model => we are “helpers”
chart of how the stakeholders mesh
  • Teach across the board => made paradigm shift
  • Faculty Gen Ed Outcome Rubrics => fit into Career Services; picked technology to focus on
  • Assumption: CIS105 students would know how to upload documents or convert Word doc to plain text (found out student learned in class how to convert to HTML but couldn’t translate that knowledge to convert to plain text)
  • Assessment 27 student 2006-2007; 98 this year (Hedy’s class)
  • Students may not know information asked in assessment
  • Maricopa Career Network “lost” as students get taken by Jobbing.com => working on ways to reverse this trend
  • Assumptions need to be examined when planning assessments
  • We do not want to leave learning to chance
Good of the Order
  • Need help trying to get people into 2/8/08 in-class performances from LACC => two student plays (follow-up with Sonia Woodard) => let’s try to make this happen (for more information, contact Jen)

Homework
  • Bring CCSSE findings (benchmark scores from web) to next meeting
