On Nov. 9, at the Division II National Junior College Athletic Association Cross Country Meet at South Plains College in Levelland, Texas, the PVCC women’s cross country team finished first to become national champions and the PVCC men’s team placed third.
"It was tough because we were all very excited, but we were very disappointed too," says head coach Dave Barney, referring to the mixed emotions felt by both teams.
The women, who are also this year’s regional champions, finished
ahead of Johnson County Community College from Overland Park,
Kan. and Lansing Community College from Lansing, Mich. who tied
for second place. More...

Guns on campus?
Debate heats up between College
Safety officers, MCCCD board

Special to Puma Press
Tragedy happens in unexpected moments and changes lives, sometimes forever.
A drunken husband, brandishing a gun, can wander onto a community college campus looking for his estranged wife. A young thief, prying a music system from a vehicle in a community college parking lot, could pull a gun if startled by a Safety officer.
Tragedy did strike in October when a 45-year-old college student, disgruntled with his grades and life, carried five handguns onto the U of A campus and murdered three college professors, then committed suicide.
These are real and potential violent situations that have led
to debates between College Safety officers and administrators
about whether to allow officers to carry guns on campus. Both
groups see the gun issue differently, yet both sides are focused
on providing safe campuses. Will it take a real-life act of
violence to settle the issue? More... |

Second year PVCC student Jamie Foster is poised to succeed. A certified EMT, Jamie works part-time on campus, attends classes and is an active campus club member.
Foster also has epilepsy, a language-based learning disability and cerebral palsy that limits mobility on the left side of her body.
Like Foster, 300 PVCC students currently claim a disability, and seek assistance from the Disability Resource Center, says Donna Young, DRC Manager.
The DRC, helps students with disabilities ranging from physical to mental impairment. According to the Federal Rehabilitation Act of 1973, the disability must substantially limit one or more life activities.

| Connie Gustafson finds shelter at La Mesita. |

Staff Writer
Located just 20 minutes south of one of the finest neighborhoods in North Scottsdale, La Mesita Family Homeless Shelter houses 25 families who have no place else to call home. The building has no sign advertising itself as a shelter for those who are dislocated or homeless; it looks like an old motel.
“This is deliberate,” says the program coordinator for the La Mesita who wishes to remain anonymous, adding that many of the shelter’s residents have come from situations of domestic violence and need their whereabouts to remain secret.
The shelter serves the homeless community by providing temporary
housing, childcare, medical care, counseling and job assistance.
Prevention and Rehabilitation of Arizona (PREHAB), a non-profit
organization, which sponsors domestic violence, homeless and
youth programs, manages La Mesita. More...
