The PVCC Book Club held its last meeting for the semester on Nov. 17 with a discussion of the book “Fateless” by Imre Kertesz and will resume on Feb. 16, reading Yann Martel’s “The Life of Pi.”
Marianne Botos, PVCC adjunct English teacher and book club facilitator, would like to encourage people to join in the monthly meetings and for those who have never been to a book club not to be alarmed as “you don’t have to speak up.” Going to the book club is an opportunity to share your thoughts with others about various well-crafted books that are read, says Botos. She likens the experience to getting together with friends after seeing a movie. Currently the club is made up of over a dozen members from the school and the surrounding community.
“The Life of Pi.” is an exciting story about survival of a 16-year-old boy from India and a 450 pound Bengal tiger aboard a life boat after a vessel transporting a zoo from India to Canada sinks.
The club will also meet on March 23 to discuss the “Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-Time” by Mark Haddon. This story is written from the point-of-view of a 15-year-old boy who has autism.
For the month of April, PVCC proudly sponsors OneBookAZ, which is a statewide reading program to bring communities together through literature and reading. It encourages communities across the state of Arizona to read the same book and participate in discussion and programs centered on that book throughout April.
In April, the PVCC Book Club, in participation with OneBookAZ, will be reading “Sunk Without a Sound” by Brad Dimock. This is the non-fiction account of Glen and Bessie Hyde’s tragic honeymoon Colorado River rafting trip in 1928.
This meeting, as the others, will be held at the library. The April meeting will take place April 20 at 7 p.m. Refreshments are provided by the PVCC Library.
