Cross-country teams seize National titles

The Pumas: 2004 Men's and Women's Cross-Country National Champions

On Nov. 6, the cross-country program tightened their grip on the necks of the rest of the nation as both the men’s and women’s teams won National Junior College Athletic Association Division I. national titles in El Paso, Texas.

Combined, the teams beat some of the top cross-country programs in the nation, including prior three-time defending men’s champions, Rend Lake Community College, of Rend Lake, Illinois. Other top schools at Nationals were Central Arizona Community College, Yavapai Community College, Pima Community College, and Lansing Community College, of Lansing, Michigan.

Work center provides means
for illegals to send money home

The following is the last of a three-part series on the Macehualli Work Center, 16801 N. 25th St., Phoenix.

Abraham Cazueta has made the grueling trip three times. It is a five-day walk across the border between Mexico and Arizona, approximately 150 miles to safety. Sometimes the desert sun is brutal; other times the nights are frigid. He risks death or detainment each time, as he did most recently just two weeks ago. Cazueta endures the trips for one reason.

“My family,” says Cazueta. “I come to America to help my family.”

Cazueta’s hard work provides a higher standard of living for his family than he believes he could achieve for them in his home in Sonora, Mexico.

College Safety rekindles issue:
Officers want to carry firearms


After being voted down by a narrow 3-2 vote, by the district board in March 2003, in the midst of a heated debate, the issue of College Safety officers carrying guns on campus has been revived.

According to Dr. Jane Saldaña-Talley, PVCC dean of administrative services, the MCCCD chancellor, Dr. Rufus Glasper, has directed the formation of a committee to examine several College Safety issues, including arming campus Safety officers.

Bond campaign practices under scrutiny


Employees of colleges throughout the district, including Paradise Valley, have allegedly broken the law during the campaign for the $951 million bond measure that passed in the November election under proposition 401.

According to Rep. Linda Gray, R-Glendale, district employees were using the district email system to write emails regarding the bond. Gray said several of these emails violate Arizona Revised Statute 15-1408, the state law that governs community colleges’ fund-raising and campaign tactics.
