Instructor wins Deaf Person of Year

  ........................
Professor Ed McGann
........................

Ed McGann, American Sign Language (ASL) instructor at PVCC, was recently named Arizona's Deaf Person of the Year for 2004 by the Arizona Council of the Deaf and Hard of Hearing (ACDHH), during Deaf Awareness week this fall.

McGann lost hearing in one ear at age 7 and in the other ear at age 9 as a result of an abscess and high fever.

McGann taught American Sign Language in Washington D.C. for 11 years before he moved to Arizona and began teaching at PVCC where he has been the past 5-6 years.

"I love it," says McGann about teaching ASL. McGann says he is very motivated to teach the 20-25 students he has each semester. One of his students nominated him for the Deaf Person of the Year award.

Aside from teaching, McGann has been involved in the ACDHH as a volunteer as well as chairperson of the Relay Center for telecommunication helping to secure better service for deaf people.
