| Proposed design $350,000 over budget
Jessica D'Amico
Fine Arts Editor
In a major blow to the construction plans for PVCC's Performing
Arts Center (PAC), the PAC committee learned last month of a $1.4 million deficit in the project budget, a figure which has since been reduced to about $350,000 but could still halt the project altogether.
According to PAC committee chairman and head of PVCC's theatre program, Alan Tongret, the architects and construction manager for the project told the PAC committee in a February meeting that the proposed design would exceed the $5.9 million budget by $1.4 million.

PVCC expects
$576,000 loss
by 2006
By Michael Leiby
Staff
According to Dr. W.L. "Hank" Mancini, Ph.D., President of the Faculty Association, the implications of the budget cutbacks will translate to a 1 percent decrease in funds for the 2003-2004 fiscal year.
This means that Paradise Valley Community College will lose $192,000 from its budget this year. This is a significant loss of funds for the campus. Mancini attributes the loss to the "state's shortfall" blaming the Arizona State Legislature for passing the cuts.

Layout of 'Paradise" to change, grow
By Frank Spink
Editor-in-chief
After two years of exhaustive planning, PVCC submitted the completed Campus Master Plan to the Maricopa Community College District Board in January.
Now, PVCC must wait to see whether Maricopa County voters share their vision of growth. The bond election day, when voters chose whether to issue bond funding, estimated to be $900 million, will take place some time in 2004. The District board will determine the exact election date.
As part of the 1992 bond election that finally passed in 1994 providing the District with $385 million in funding PVCC received about $35 million to implement their Campus Master Plan. Unfortunately, the money was not nearly enough to fund the construction that was necessary to meet their future growth.

The whir of generators and the plunk of bats hitting balls is no match for softball coach Damon Watson's booming voice.
"You two, get out ... next two, in!" he says to a couple of players practicing their hitting in the batting cages on PVCC's brand new softball field.
Watson watches his players with an intense concentration behind a pair of dark sunglasses. Every now and then he shouts out a tip to the player at bat. His constructive criticism could easily be mistaken for simply barking out orders, but anyone aware of his history as a softball coach knows better.
