Two PVCC professors, anthropologist Jan Downey and environmental biologist David Harbster, were among just 14 professors chosen from a nationwide search to tour Vietnam and Cambodia in January.

The tour, offered by the Council on International Education Exchange, offered participants a chance to come together with other professors with similar interests to learn and better understand the post war development and reconciliation efforts in both Vietnam and Cambodia, on the 30-year anniversary of the Vietnam War’s end. The trip was an experience that both say they will not forget, providing them both with knowledge that they will be able to pass on to students.

Downey and Harbster spent Jan. 3-14 touring both countries by land, river and air with their 12 new comrades. They agreed it was an honor to be chosen. According to Downey, prospective tourists were chosen after submitting a written proposal. “I felt drawn to the trip,” Downey said. “I was worried, but had a sense I was going to go.” Harbster also expressed worry about whether he would be invited, and relief and excitement at the opportunity after he was chosen.

“It’s a girl,” Isaiah Lee said, starting at the half-dead bug still trying to move its legs and escape to a dark hiding place.

“It’s a boy,” Christopher counters.

“Girl, girl, girl,” Isaiah Lee insists, joined by a group of her peers.

“He’s smashed,” said Christopher.

“It has two left feet,” Isaiah Lee notices.

“I think he dead. He laying down on his back,” Aaron says.

“If you stop talking, he will get more air and wake up,” says Daaja.

Such are the conversations of three to five year olds, as they discover the world around them. But the world of these preschoolers doesn’t go unnoticed. Their teacher is busy writing notes about her preschoolers’ conversations. Elsewhere, another teacher is video taping her young charges’ activities.

Spying? No, documenting.

Reports PVCC 'dedicated to learning, teaching'

On Thursday, February 3, PVCC administrators, including PVCC President Mary Kay Kickels and Vice-President of Learning Support Services Dr. Paul Dale, held two town hall meetings to announce the release of the Paradise Valley Community College Self-Study Report 2005.

The Self-Study, issued in compliance with the requirements set forth by the Higher Learning Commission of the North Central Association of Colleges and Schools, is an instrumental part of maintaining future accreditation for PVCC. The Higher Education act requires all schools be accredited in order to receive any federal assistance.
