In the hot Iraqi deserts temperatures have reached as high as 145º. However the men and women of the United States armed forces must haul up to 60 lbs. of equipment on their backs, working off of modest sleep and very little food or water. To top it off, at any moment bullets may fly past them and bombs ignite only steps away.
After hearing the horror stories of heat stroke, dehydration and even death due to the extreme temperatures, two Phoenix women, Sue McCormick and Susan Czubek, who have fiancés fighting in the war on terrorism, decided it was time to do something to support U.S. troops.

Imagine you're at a party and a terrible accident befalls you. The water that's boiling for lobsters somhow gets knocked off the stove and is streaming down the front of your body. Your skin is scorched immediately. As friends call 911, the searing pain feels like it's already reached to the bone. Now imagine having to be flown out of state to get care for your severe burns. When every minute counts to save a burn victim, imagine enduring a 292-mile trip to the closest burn center in Las Vegas.
If proposition 414 does not pass on Tuesday, Nov. 4, and this misfortune were to occur, your trip to a burn center could be as long as 1,067 miles. The next closest burn centers to Las Vegas are in San Diego, Los Angeles, Denver, Salt Lake City and Dallas.

In January, PVCC will begin teaching students in its new nursing program in partnership with John C. Lincoln Hospital on 250 East Dunlap Ave.
"This program will be extremely popular," says PVCC's new nursing program chair, Rose Dermody, RN, MSN. A nurse for 35 years, she began teaching in 1991 and came to PVCC last year where she taught the nurse assistant classes.
A maximum of 33 students will be admitted into this program, which takes four semesters to complete, not including summers.
