Growth a
challenge for PVCC, MCCCD

With enrollment rising at PVCC, growth is one of the main issues PVCC and MCCCD administrations will strive to deal with in the coming years.

The full time student enrollment, or FTSE, for fiscal year 2003-2004 was 3,971 having risen 6.6 percent since the previous year. Although this number is below the projected 7.3 percent growth, the figure caps 10 years of 5 percent or more growth and follows 6.1 percent growth last year, according to official district 45th Day FTSE reports.

The current headcount at PVCC of total students enrolled is approximately 8,600, and according to district projections that number should almost double by 2014. By that year, PVCC’s service area is projected to grow by 150,000 residents.

Editors Note: The following is the second of a three-part series exploring the controversy surrounding the Macehualli Work Center, 16801 N. 25th St. The third part will focus on supporters of the center.

Guards detain illegal aliens at a border crossing between the United States and Mexico. Thousands of illegal aliens cross the border unchecked into the states every day.
Opposition to the Macehualli Work Center has been fierce from the moment it opened for business on Feb. 1, 2003 with $120,000 in taxpayer funds.

Opponents to the center have argued first that the center exists for the use of illegal immigrants in open opposition to federal law. Second, they argue that the center encourages more illegal immigrants to flee Mexico in search of jobs in the United States. Third, they maintain that illegal immigration causes an unnecessary burden on the American taxpayer, and anything that encourages it is a detriment to taxpayers.

Several thousand Kerry supporters gathered at Tempe Town Lake Beach Park to watch the last presidential debate live on two large screens. The Foo Fighters energized the crowd by performing some of their hit songs before and after the debate.
Lead singer Dave Grohl spoke of hitting the campaign trail with Kerry during the summer through Wisconsin, Iowa and Missouri playing acoustic sets. He says he was inspired to join the campaign after hearing that some of his music was being played at Bush rallies.
