SIS delayed until spring
By Janice L. Semmel
Community Editor Anticipation of the new Student Information System hit a snag when the Chancellor’s Executive Committee announced on Sept. 20 that the “go-live” date for SIS would be moved from Oct. 9, 2007 to a new date in the spring. In response to the SIS postponement, Paul Golisch, PVCC co-project manager, says that even though the PVCC Implementation Team suffered initial disappointment at the postponement, they continue to attend meetings and accomplish work responsibilities. Team members will use the extra time to conduct more training sessions for students and faculty and conduct more testing on the system. Golisch says, “Recent testing of the system showed that without more troubleshooting the system could freeze or become unstable. The decision to postpone was made in order to avoid any potential disruptions of student and faculty utilization, including registering for courses and posting grades.” Linda Rosenthal, MCCCD Governing Board President, says, “I am extremely disappointed that the SIS is delayed yet again. I am told that the delay will avoid any potential disruptions of student and faculty utilization.” A statement from the district office dated Sept. 20 said that moving the “go-live” date to after spring registration allows the introduction of SIS with a minimum of disruption to the district’s academic calendar. The statement says MCCCD anticipated and dealt with system problems that occurred, but they did not anticipate the number or complexity of problems. To ensure that these problems did not interfere with the implementation of SIS, they chose to move the “go-live” date. They believe they can deliver SIS by next spring. Any additional costs associated with the delay in implementing SIS come from 2004 bond issue proceeds. |
