SLC serves student body

As the Student Leadership Council gears up for a new year, they encourage students to get involved with SLC by serving as senators or club representatives, participating in community service projects, helping with fundraisers or dropping by Student Life in KSC135 to discuss leadership opportunities or student concerns. Student Leadership Council serves as the governing board for all students and clubs on the PVCC campus. The SLC participates in the following activities. Hold meetings the first and third Tuesday of each month from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m.; Manage an annual budget of at least $25,000; Sponsor, plan and operate fundraisers such as car washes, Adopt-a-Family, Adopt-a-Street and the annual, up-coming Mystery Party; Attend conferences to network with local and national students, learn new leadership skills and obtain event and service projects ideas; Schedule weekly office hours in the Student Life Center to meet with students. Executive board officers of SLC include Ana Terminel-Iberri, chairperson; Scott Mason, vice chairperson; Brittany “BG” Sims, secretary; Daniel Rush, treasurer; and Melynda Ostrander, public relations. JaMae Van Eeuwen, Michael J. Bouey, Jr. and newly-elected Vaughn Walker serve as senators on SLC. Van Eeuwen says that SLC gives members an opportunity to listen to student ideas and create activities and opportunities for students to become more involved and comfortable with school. She also thinks SLC creates increased interaction between students and faculty. Rush encourages students to get involved on campus or participate in clubs. He says, “It really can make the college experience more enjoyable, and also give another reason to be more successful in school. You can also gain many more friends…and build confidence and self-awareness.” The SLC attends leadership conferences during the year. This semester current members journeyed to the American Student Government Association Conference in Washington, D.C. from September 27-30, and in February, they travel to the National Collegiate Leadership Conference in Tucson. Sims says, “I’d really like if the Student Life Office was thought of by all students as a welcoming environment that encourages fellowship and leadership among students as well as a place to get involved and make a difference during their time here at PVCC.” Students interested in applying for an SLC senator position may go to the Student Life Center and obtain and complete an application for one of the five available senate positions. Students can also join one of the approximately 30 clubs at PVCC and attend SLC meetings as a club representative. |
