Each generation of Americans have a distinguishing mark, something that sets them apart from those who lived before them. In recent years, youth have gravitated toward the display of a most personal form of communication: a permanent story or memory left marked in their skin. “A tattoo is a work of art with a different canvas,” says tattoo artist Sean Salisz of Liquid Visions in Phoenix, Ariz. The following young adults explain their reasons for having chosen what is etched into their skin: “‘Alice in Wonderland’ was my favorite story when I was a little girl,” says Erin Thomas, a student at Glendale Community College, as she displays a tattoo.
