PVCC evens season series with conference front runner Pima

The PVCC Lady Pumas soccer team started their season off on the right foot with a 3-2 victory over rival Chandler-Gilbert Community College on Sept. 2. The Coyotes were ranked No. 3 in the country.

Alyssa Flores and Holly Benson both scored in the first half for the Pumas. Flores would add her second goal of the game to take a commanding 3-0 lead. Chandler-Gilbert would charge back with one goal in the 56th minute and another goal with four minutes to go in the game. With some tight defense and great goalkeeping from Michelle Hoekstra, the Pumas held on 3-2.

“We knew CGCC was a good team, and we would have to play a full 90 minutes,” said Kacey Bingham, head women’s soccer coach. “I think we lost some momentum in the end of the game that we can’t afford to do in the future.”

The Pumas went on to beat Cochise College 5-0 the following Saturday. Caiti Currey and Nicole Acosta accounted for all five goals, two from Currey and three from Acosta. On Labor Day, Sept. 7, PVCC dominated Gateway Community College 7-1 with goals from Nicole Acosta, Ashlee Hayes, Amy Eyden, Caiti Currey, Kayla McClain and Alyssa Flores.

PVCC would lose two close ones after their 3-0 start. In Tucson, the Pumas lost a 2-1 decision to the Pima Community College Aztecs on Sept. 9, and a 1-0 heartbreaker to Mesa Community College. The Pumas beat Phoenix College 2-0 on Wednesday, Sept. 16.

“We really focused on finishing the game with a good defensive effort,” said Bingham after their win against PC. “The team worked hard as a whole, and we were able to get the result we wanted.”

The Pumas will take on Scottsdale Community College at home
