Frequently Asked Questions
Q. Whose college is this?

A. It's the community's college. Paradise Valley Community College (PVCC) is now responsible for the planning and eventual operation of the facility.

Q. What’s the connection between PVCC and this new north campus?
A. First, just proximity. The proposed site is 12.07 miles from PVCC, or about 19 min., making it convenient to schedule faculty and administration. Second, PVCC is already serving the Carefree/Cave Creek community--currently more students from the Carefree/Cave Creek area (about 600) are enrolled at PVCC than at any other MCCD college. Third, we have a long-standing, strong relationship with the Cave Creek School District. The Cave Creek Unified School District, along with the Paradise Valley USD and Deer Valley USD, is part of the Learning Connections Consortium. That's a group of schools and educators including PVCC, ASU West, Northern Arizona University, and Rio Salado College that works on joint projects to improve educational opportunity for residents of the north valley. Recent projects include developing strategies for attracting students into the field of teaching, conducting teacher workshops in math education, and exploring common areas of concern in student counseling and advising.

Q. When will the PVCC Black Mountain site open?
A. The timeframe for construction and buildout is estimated to be between 2009 and 2012.

Q. How will PVCC serve the area until the site opens?
A. We are presently offering both continuing education--noncredit--and credit classes in facilities at Cactus Shadows High School.

Q. What will the PVCC Black Mountain site be called?
A. The Maricopa Community College District Governing Board has not yet selected a name for the proposed site.

Q. Why won't the PVCC Black Mountain site be built sooner?
A. In November 2004, the citizens of Maricpa County approved a $951 million bond meaure for the Maricopa County Community College District. The bond revenues will be used for construction of new classrooms and laboratories, the remodeling of existing facilities, and for technology. Bonds are issued periodically throughout a 10-year period, with the first dollars going to serve existing campus needs. Master planning will be the first step in the design of a new campus. Those planning efforts always involve the local community being served--with lots of input on desired programming of courses and services. A series of community forums have already begun.

Q. What about the Desert Foothills YMCA project?
A. The Valley of the Sun YMCA is considering purchasing land at the college site, but that is still preliminary; and an agreement hasn't yet been finalized. Should that go ahead, the "Y" will need to raise funds for the facility and will then require a period for planning and construction. The college may have classrooms in the YMCA building prior to the completion of the college campus itself.

Q. Is there information on the Web about courses offered there?
A. The PVCC Black Mountain Web site can be accessed at : www.pvc.maricopa.edu/pvccnorth We are receptive to discussions regarding the best way to serve your needs through lifelong learning opportunities. For further information or comments, contact Judi Anderson at (602)787-6800.
