Minutes

Minutes from TCT Meeting:
Wednesday, October 6, 2004, 12:45P-1:45P

Members Present: John Chavez, Chrystle Hall, Cathy Hart, Kurt Hill, Mary Lou Mosley, Jim Patterson, Rick Sheets, Casey Durandet

Issues/items discussed:

1) Meeting dates for Spring 2005:
We've agreed on the following Wednesday dates for our meetings in Spring 2005:
January 26, February 9, February 23, March 9, March 23, April 6, April 20, and May 4.
All times will be from 12:45P-1:45P in the G-conference room. (There may be times when we will meet weekly when working on the budget.)

2) Ocotillo Reports/Status:
Jim reported that he visited Rio Salado today and gave a presentation to a group of 8 people (many division chairs) on Emerging Learning Technologies. The main question asked was, "What are the major learning challenges, barriers to higher education, or problems we face at Maricopa within the next 10 years?"

The Rio Salado meeting lasted 45 minutes, and Jim would like to do this presentation at PVCC sometime in late October or early November. He would like to engage the college in this endeavor.

3) SPT and PBRC Reports:
Cathy handed out a memo from the President's office that discussed the approval of the Operational Plan/Budget recommendations for FY 05-06.

Cathy said she has met with the division chair regarding their technology uses and requests.

SPT report next meeting.

4) HEWAC-WiSE Status:
John reported that the application fell through. He never heard back from the individuals with whom he was dealing. He was not even able to talk to them via phone.

5) Media Services - Digital/Video Broadcasting Proposal:
Cathy provided the committee an overview of what the proposal entails - the Multi-Camera Switch Package is a digital system that consists of 3 to 5 cameras, tripods, switcher, monitors, mixers, camera control units, and a headphone talk-back system. This package is essential in the production process of capturing video materials for campus use. It will be used in the production of educational materials.

Lily Fultz held a meeting on September 22 to determine what kind of support PVCC can get for this. Jim attended this meeting and talked with the design master, Jim Chalifoux of Digital Media Design (602-690-8652). Jim O'Brian (from Scottsdale CC, 480-423-6350) is also affiliated with Jim Chalifoux. Jim talked with Chalifoux, but no actual quotes were given. A ball park cost is $1000,000 (after the bond). Jim Chalifoux is continuing to work with Lily.

PVCC could partner with someone who could purchase the equipment (save costs), include their logo, etc.

We will continue to be updated as to the progress of this proposal.

6) Wireless - Technology Opportunities Program:
Jon is working on a proposal - the TOP promotes the widespread availability and use of digital network technologies in the public and non-profit sectors. TOP gives grants for model projects demonstrating innovative uses of network technologies. TOP evaluates and actively shares the lessons learned from these projects to ensure the benefits are broadly distributed across the country.

Cathy reported (for Jon) that this is a highly matching grant. The main concern is that wireless is a staffing concern, not a $ concern - we don't have enough people.

Jon requested that a small group from TCT convene to review the proposal, determine the next steps, something we want to pursue (?), and we have to show that this project benefits the community. The three volunteers are: Cathy, Jon, and John. They will report back to the committee as whole their progress, recommendations, etc.

7) EDUCAUSE:
We looked at the EDUCAUSE 2002 Summary Report, and Rick reported on the following:
Standards - Looking at: (a) How complex is the image? (b) Match images to instructional programs. (c) Over 50 images being maintained in the Computer Commons, and there are 50+ more for the rest of the campus.

We're ahead of the game in terms of having a plan in place.

Rick focused on some parts of the report, specifically the following pages:

Page 16 - Technology fees - Cathy said that last year PVCC proposed an increase of $5, now to $10. Reluctance to increase it in light of the bond and the increased tuition cost. We have $20,000 from Fund 1 for OYO, this year only.

Direct Instructional Liaisons - asking for an increase in fees. We need to wait until after November 2 (bond). If the bond passes, then probably all the MCCCD colleges will implement a technology fee.

Page20 - % of Computers with Replacement Funding - this year, we're falling behind (no occupational $). Last year, we were on plan. The summary report recommended every 3-4 years for replacement. We can only keep it at the 5 year plan.

Page 28 - Student Computing - There is more of a need for students to have access to computers at PVCC than at hone.

8) SIS Implementation Update:
Please note, per Cathy, that the SIS deployment has been moved from Spring Break 2005 to early July 2005.

Chrystle will demonstrate EASIS at our next meeting. Visit

The next TCT meeting is scheduled for Wednesday, October 20, 2004, 12:45P-1:45P in the G-conference room (G-126).
