TELLING STORIES |
Narratives, written over a period of time, capture children’s evolving awareness, skills and attitudes. They also provide a window into how learning experiences are connected. Using stories to document projects helps adults understand how children construct their own learning by making sense of their experiences. |

Malik and the Millipede
A site director recounts how he and a student explore the mystery of a millipede. As the story unfolds, their combined interest takes them from a tiny picture in a magazine to the Internet and, finally, to a hands-on search through the school playground dirt. These photographs, drawings, and dialogues demonstrate that the topic for investigation, per se, is secondary to the actual research process.
