2012-2013 Theatre Season

SUMMER 2013:

The Drowsy ChaperoneThe Drowsy Chaperone
A musical by Bob Martin & Don McKellar with music/lyrics by Lisa Lambert & Greg Morrison
Directed by Andrea Robertson

A rare combination of unprecedented originality and blinding talent, THE DROWSY CHAPERONE boldly addresses a great unspoken desire in all of our hearts: to be entertained. If you've ever sat in a dark theatre and thought, "Dear Lord in heaven, please let it be good," this is the show for you!

It all begins when a die-hard musical-theater fan plays his favorite cast album on his turntable, and the musical literally bursts to life in his living room, telling the rambunctious tale of a brazen Broadway starlet trying to find, and keep, her true love.

Performances are June 20, 21, 22, 28, 29 at 7:30 & June 23 and 30 at 2:00 pm.

You Can't Take It With YouYou Can’t Take it With You
A comedic play in three acts by George S. Kaufman and Moss Hart
Directed by Gary Zaro

You Can't Take It With You has been delighting audiences since 1936. Written by George S. Kaufman and Moss Hart, this Pulitzer Prize winning comedy celebrates non-conformity. At first the Sycamores seem mad, but it is not long before we realize that if they are mad, the rest of the world is madder. In contrast to these delightful people are the unhappy Kirbys. The plot shows how Tony, attractive young son of the Kirbys, falls in love with Alice Sycamore and brings his parents to dine at the Sycamore home on the wrong evening. The shock sustained by the Kirbys, who are invited to eat cheap food, shows Alice that marriage with Tony is out of the question. The Sycamores, however, though sympathetic to Alice, find it hard to realize her point of view. Meantime, Tony, who knows the Sycamores are right and his own people wrong, will not give her up, and in the end Mr. Kirby is converted to the happy madness of the Sycamores, particularly since he happens in during a visit by an ex-Grand Duchess, earning her living as a waitress. No mention has as yet been made of the strange activities of certain members of the household engaged in the manufacture of fireworks; nor of the printing press set up in the parlor; nor of Rheba the maid and her friend Donald; nor of Grandpa's interview with the tax collector when he tells him he doesn't believe in the income tax.

Performances are April 12, 13, 19, 20,  7:30 & April 14th and 21th at 2:00 pm.

Center for the Performing Arts; 18401 North 32nd St, Phoenix, AZ 85032

The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling BeeThe 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee
A musical with music and lyrics by William Finn, book by Rachel Sheinkin
Directed by Andrea Robertson

The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee is a hilarious tale of overachievers' angst chronicling the experience of six adolescent outsiders vying for the spelling championship of a lifetime, overseen by grownups who barely managed to escape childhood themselves. The show's Tony Award winning creative team has created the unlikeliest of hit musicals about the unlikeliest of heroes: a quirky yet charming cast of outsiders for whom a spelling bee is the one place where they can stand out and fit in at the same time.

Before every performance four audience volunteers are recruited to participate on-stage as guest spellers.  Come and try out your spelling!

Bus StopBus Stop
William Inge
Directed by Joe Flowers

Bus Stop is William Inge’s classic romantic comedy about two young lovers and their struggle to find a place in the world.  A snowstorm is raging in the Midwest, and a group of bus passengers take shelter in a small diner outside of Kansas City.  Stranded for the rest of the night, the passengers and diners have to deal with a loud, boisterous cowboy and relentless pursuit of a pretty young girl from the Ozarks.  As the night passes, Inge’s characters reveal how tough finding true love can be.  Originally directed by Harold Clurman in 1955, Bus stop was nominated for four Tony awards including Best Play.
