What is the AmeriCorps Program?

AmeriCorps is a national service program initiated by President Clinton, and is often referred to as the ‘domestic Peace Corps.” AmeriCorps provides thousands of Americans of all ages and backgrounds with education awards in exchange for community service. In addition, there are full-time and part-time AmeriCorps programs available to meet the various lifestyles of its members. Nationally, over 150,000 AmeriCorps members have helped to meet the nation’s critical needs in the areas of public safety, education, human services, and the environment. Project Ayuda is considered a part-time AmeriCorps program and is designed specifically for college students, although non-students in the community may participate as well. To learn more about AmeriCorps programs, visit their website at www.americorps.gov.

What do Project Ayuda members do?

In Arizona, the work that Project Ayuda members do is as diverse as the individuals themselves. Project Ayuda members can serve in three different goal areas: building learning partnerships, improving public health and safety, and addressing other unmet human needs. Individuals may tutor and mentor K-12 children and teens, recruit and train volunteers, develop plans to revitalize neighborhoods and the environment, serve in community health organizations, develop and promote service programs on campus, and develop partnerships with local community agencies. As a Project Ayuda member, you may attend statewide workshops and conferences and participate in leadership training and service events. If you are already involved in service work, and/or school-related fieldwork (i.e., clinical work, student teaching, etc.), Project Ayuda is a natural fit!

What does a Project Ayuda member receive?

In exchange for valuable community service, Project Ayuda members receive a monetary award that can be applied to school loans, finance undergraduate and graduate school, or to finance vocational training. The amount of the award depends upon the length of the service commitment the member chooses. The Project Ayuda Educational Award Program of Arizona offers three award choices, so no matter what your schedule, completing service is manageable and fun!

--- $1,000 Education Award = 300 hour/1 year term of service

--- $1,250 Education Award = 450 hour/1 year term of service

--- $1,800 Education Award = 675 hour/1 year term of service

--- $2,363 Education Award = 900 hour/2 year term of service
