Module 4: Democracy and Government

1 - 2 - 3 - 4 - 5 - 6 - 7 - 8 - 9
What can this program do for you?

What is democracy? As far as language goes, "democracy" is a relatively new term and is based on the Greek word "demokratia." In Greek, "demos" means "people" and "kratos" means "rule or power". However, people often use the word democracy to mean many different things.

In this module, you will explore various concepts of “democracy” and investigate whether your service can foster democracy across the world.

1. Do you think your AmeriCorps service builds democracy? Why or why not?

2. Comment on the following excerpt from the ICP July 2005 article on Youth Service: "What is missing is not motivation and interest from young people, but rather structured opportunities that help young people to develop the skills, knowledge and values necessary to build strong communities and democratic and participatory cultures.”
