The Elements of Fiction:
What
every good story is made of:

Setting: Time and place of the story; could be real
or imaginary, historical or current.

Characterization: The personalities of the story,
evident through their descriptions, their actions and their words
·
Protagonist:
The main character or “hero” of the story
·
Antagonist:
The “bad guy,” the person struggling against the hero.
·
Plot: Events of the story
·
Conflict: A problem that has to be solved.
·
Rising Action: The actions and conflict get worse, more tense.
·
Climax: The crisis
point at which something has to break, give way, change.
·
Resolution: The solving of the problem, the wrap up.
·
Theme: The main idea or “message” of the story. What we learn about life from the story.
·
Point of View: The source, or
“voice” of the narrator; who is telling the story:
o
First Person:
I am telling the story, and I’m in it.
o
Third person: Someone “outside the story” is telling it
about others.
o
Either
point of view can be limited (to one character’s view) or omniscient (knows all
about all the characters and every thing that is happening.)
