What's New... has a new look and more coverage of what's new in learning assistance and especially what's new that is relevant to learning support centers in higher education. What's New will be covering 5 areas of interest: People, Conferences, LSCHE News, Recent Publications, and Technology.

People: News about leaders in our field who are no longer with us.
Memorial web pages have been placed in LSCHE to honor Gene Kerstiens, a founder of CRLA (then known as WCRA) and a memorial page is being developed for Martha Maxwell (Improving Student Learning Skills) and for Bill White (graduate professor, Grambling State U.). All three have died this past year.  Also, LSCHE has received a notice that Dr. Harry Hild, former president of NARDSPE (NADE) had died in October, 2009 and even more recently, Kathy Carpenter, former president of CRLA.

We are also interested in capturing other colleagues from the past and have begun listing others we plan to inlcude on the page. If you have addtional information on them or others who should be on the page, please email Frank L Christ with details.

Conferences & Institutes: Coverage of events relevant to learning support centers. This may include keynotes, pre and post conference workshops, and session presentations. Some of these presentations may have a handout that may be copied and printed.

The Innovative Educator webinar, Best Practices for Learning Support Centers in Higher Education, presented by Frank Christ online, May 7, 2009 was attended by over 40 institutions from 25 states. A revised, expanded, and interactive edition of these best practices was presented at a post conference workshop at the 2009 NCLCA Conference in Golden, CO on October 3, 2009.  The list of practices is available on LSCHE in the "About Learning Support Centers" section.

LSCHE News: Changes, deletions, and additions to LSCHE

Winners in the NCLCA/LSCHE annual learning center website awards program for 2009 can be seen in LSCHE. Presentation of the award plaques and certificates occurred at the NCLCA 2009 conference (October 1) in Golden, CO.

The number of learning center web sites has increased to 1500 --thanks to the work of Alan Craig of Georgia Perimeter College. Remember to access this resource whenever you have a question on learning center programs. This is a cost-effective way of "visiting" other learning centers. and gleaning ideas for your own center, its web site, programs and services. BTW, this list can be used to benchmark your learning center's website with the award winners.

Recent Publications/2008: Print and Internet material relevant to learning center will be listed here and then may be moved to Resources/Articles & Presentations.

The bibliography, along with additional works, of the CRLA Monograph, Starting a Learning Assistance Center: Conversations with CRLA Members Who Have Been There and Done That, is now accessible in the Resources/Bibliographies (Courtesy of H & H Publishing Company).

Technology. Items relevant to learning centers.
