Readability Formulae. To assess the readability of writing, one can use a number of formulae that will indicate the relative ease or difficulty of the material.  Three formulae are considered useful for faculty to determine the readability of books and articles: Fry's Graph, Dale-Chall Formula, and the Gunning Fox Index. You can choose to explore these formulae below.

Dale-Chall Formula (New ) Scroll down to article in the Plain Language At Work Newsletter(13 June 2005). In addition to the new formula decription, this article references 3 web sites related to the formula and the 1995 book, Dale and Chall, Readability Revisited: The New Dale-Chall Readability Formula, published by Brookline Books.
