Four Learner Support Activities from Frank L Christ

Of all the support activities that I recommend for instructors to consider, the following four are highly recommended to assist students in being more successful as online learners:

1. Add a “Learning Support” button to your Course Management System whether it is Angel, Blackboard, Desire2Learn, Sakai , Web-CT, or any other that you are using.

      or                       or

2.   Have a special section in your syllabus that describes the learning support materials that you have available for your students.

3.   Use Performance Tips as a Just-in-Time intervention when students indicate that they have a learning and study strategies problem.

4.  Offer a link to a web collection of learning and study strategies handouts such as the following:

•  Study Guides and Strategies, formerly a St. Thomas University web site, is independently maintained by Joe Landsberger, its original developer. It contains more than 100 items and translations of most items into 18 languages.

•  Wilton HS Chemistry Coach with almost 2000 links. Chemistry Coach Links to a Better Education. Retrieved April 23, 2003 from http://www.chemistrycoach.com/lbe4.htm

•  Chemeketa CC Study Skills Resources. Includes links to specific learning assistance from Accounting to Theater courses. .Retrieved April 23, 2003 from http://www.howtostudy.org/
