Promising Practices for Online Student Learning Support : A Learning Assistance Perspective

A list of promising practices developed at a workshop presented by Frank L Christ at the College Reading & Learning Association 2005 Annual Conference held in Long Beach, CA.*

 

Promising Practices to Support the Online Learner [17]

  • The Learning Support Center (LSC) is involved in campus orientation for online students
  • The LSC is part of any campus academic support team for online students
  • The LSC is part of any survey or inventory of student competencies for online learning.
  • The LSC's learning assistance support for online students is a part of course evaluations.

 

 

  • The LSC has a link to online learning assistance on its web site
  • The LSC web site is a link from the its campus online courses.
  • The LSC encourages online course instructors to link to it from their online courses.

 

 

  • The LSC has a staff member who functions as a learning assistance specialist for online students
  • The LSC offers F2F support to online students who live nearby even if they are not enrolled at its institution
  • The LSC has a staff member on the campus distance learning committee.

 

 

  • The LSC develops learning and study skills materials for online student support
  • The LSC recommends ancillary learning assistance texts for online courses
  • The LSC assists course instructors to embed student learning and study strategies in online courses.
