Title: Learning
Associate
Job Summary: Provides tutoring
for specific disciplines, which may include writing
or language-related assistance to students. Monitors
and maintains the pertinent laboratory. May promote
computer/Internet usage within lab.
Scope: This position works in
an assigned area. Work contacts include faculty, staff
and students. Equipment used includes standard office
equipment as well as a master console and individual
work stations.
Supervision Received: This position
reports to the division/department chair responsible
for the assigned area; receives general direction
regarding routine and standard matters and specific
instructions regarding non-routine and sensitive matters.
Supervision Exercised: May direct
the work of students.
Representative Duties: Assists
students at various content levels of assigned discipline;
explains research strategies and documentation styles;
assigns computer drills, other practice exercises,
simulations, and Internet searches as needed; may
provide explanation of grammar, syntax, and vocabulary;
assists students in completion and review of homework
assignments; assists students in preparing for exams;
offers conversational practice; maintains student
folders and records; assists students with basic computer
procedures, including signing in and using laboratory
software; monitors and maintains the assigned laboratory,
including scheduling, budget, planning and reporting;
may assist students in finding, understanding and
using computer and Internet-based instructional resources
and aids; performs related duties as assigned.
Knowledge and Abilities:
Knowledge of: specific discipline
tutored; general laboratory operations; basic language
software; college level
content; research procedures and
documentation styles, including MLA; Internet searching
and usage.
Ability to: tutor students using
textbooks, workbooks and computers and Internet; maintain
student and laboratory records; oversee use of laboratory;
may solve problems related to laboratory and computer
use; maintain equipment; communicate effectively orally
and in writing and establish cooperative working relationships
with persons contacted in the course of performing
assigned duties.
Training and Experience : Any
combination of education, training, and experience
that provides the required knowledge and abilities.
An example of this would be a college degree in discipline
tutored and/or tutoring or laboratory experience in
assigned discipline.
Special Conditions of Employment:
May require some evening hours.
