What is Learning Assistance?
There are as many
definitions of learning assistance as there are names of
the centers where learning assistance programs and services
are housed and administered. For a comprehensive listing
of learning assistance definitions that have been published
in educational literature, you will be able soon to access
LINDEX (TM), an extensive, searchable learning assistance
database created and compiled by Frank Christ. LINDEX(TM)
is presently under construction and will be available as
part of "A Virtual Learning Assistance Center,"
one of the Winter Institute website features.
Learning assistance can be defined
operationally as the help offered to all students (undergraduate
and graduate), faculty, administration, and staff at postsecondary
institutions in order to enhance instructional processes
and optimize learning experiences. Learning assistance may
include course support through tutoring, supplemental instruction,
study skills referrals, and in-class learning skills workshops.
It may also include walk-in learning skills diagnosis and
assistance, campus-wide study skills workshops, special
group workshops, class presentations and tours, and referrals
to other campus support agencies.
