This is the sixth of 9 weekly e-mails designed to share interesting and important ideas from the 2005 PVCC Self-Study Report. Each week will feature a different employee perspective and original art from our own David Bradley.

Today's Topic: Criterion Three:  Student Learning and Effective Teaching, Part 2
"Learning Environments"

Background

Part 2 of Criterion Three examines PVCC's learning environments and its resources dedicated to support learning.  In particular, findings in this section promote the "culture of synergy" at PVCC, the college's commitment to accessibility and responsiveness, and its support for the effective use of technology.

 Reflections by: Jon Storslee

What three things did Jon learn or find interesting?

1.    Sixty-one percent of employees are directly involved in instruction.

2.    The Computer Commons usage has increased 73% over the last four years.

3.    choices@pvc (distance learning program) offers over 110 classes and enrollment of over 2,000 students.

What are three important Ideas for a first time visitor to PVCC?

1.    The Library has 51,000 holdings (books, media and magazines), access to numerous online resources.  PVCC students can also use the resources available at the public library next to the campus.  Our students can access online resources using our “state of the art” computer facilities on campus.

 2.    The Learning Support Center has free one-on-one, in-class, and online tutoring.

 3.    In an innovative partnership, John C. Lincoln Health Network is providing facilities and faculty funding for PVCC's nursing program.

Summary
Despite a limited budget, PVCC has  a variety of resources for learning.  The Computer Commons, choices@pvc, and the Learning Support Center (LSC) are a few of the resources that contribute to student success at Paradise Valley.  We also offer innovative programs such as First Year Experience (FYE), Athletics Retention Program, Service-Learning, Under-Prepared Student Initiative, SUCCEED/ACE, and Emerging Leaders.
