This is the seventh of 9 weekly e-mails designed to share interesting and important ideas from the 2005 PVCC Self-Study Report. Each week will feature a different employee perspective and original art from our own David Bradley.

Today's Topic: Criterion Four:  Acquisition, Discovery, & Application of Knowledge, Part 1
"Life of Learning  and Responsible Use of Knowledge"

Background

At first glance, Criterion Four seems to address four-year research institutions.  A close inspection, however, reveals that this criterion is applicable to any college.  Faculty, staff, and students are encouraged to broaden their thinking and make good use of their learning.  In this e-mail update, the focus is on  core components A and D which examine professional development, recognition, and the responsible use of information.

Reflections by: Mary Lou Goff

What three things did Mary Lou learn or find interesting?

1.   The MCLI Director has described the E&OL program as “The model employee development program in the district.”

 2.   Faculty, library staff, tutors in the Writing Center, and the Computer Commons staff have a strong commitment to teach students what plagiarism is and how to avoid it.

3.  All students in the First Year Experience program are required to complete a service-learning project.

What are three important Ideas for a first time visitor to PVCC?

1.   PVCC supports activities that focus on social responsibility through the Service-Learning Program, Emerging Leaders, the Student Leadership Council, and the Center for International Studies.

 2.  PVCC strongly supports employee and organizational learning to ultimately improve student learning.

 3.  PVCC is a friendly, open, caring, learning-centered institution with a deep commitment to learning.
