Crosscutting Themes in
Paradise Valley Community College’s
Self-Study Report
In preparation for re-affirmation of accreditation by the Higher
Learning Commission (HLC) of the North Central Association of
Colleges and Schools, educational institutions must prepare a
comprehensive Self-Study Report. Paradise Valley Community College
has completed its report and submitted it to a team of consultant-evaluators
who will be on campus from Feb. 28-Mar. 2, 2005. The HLC has only
recently established a set of new criteria for accreditation.
The HLC publication The Handbook of Accreditation notes: “Several
overarching and fundamental themes are evident in the new Criteria….
In promulgating the new Criteria, the Commission demonstrates
that it values the four themes of orientation to the future, focus
on learning, connectedness (internally and externally), and distinctiveness.”
The HLC highly recommends that a college identify its major crosscutting
themes in its report. PVCC has done so. Manifestly indicative
of who we are as a college, these are the four crosscutting themes:
- The Learning-Centered College
- Creating a Culture of Assessment
- Living the Mission Documents
- Program Review, Evaluation and Connections
to Our Community
Overview: The following crosscutting themes are woven throughout
the PVCC Self-Study Report. Since these themes form the structural
framework of the Self-Study, they are presented here in this white
paper report. They will help you further your understanding of
these themes and assist you in articulating them to others.
