Institute/Session Summary:
The objective of this session is to share and debut the updated design
of the Cambridge-Stratford Study Skills course. The presentation will
share the electronic, online, hybrid version recently developed. The
attendees will view a power point and internet based presentation of
the course model.
Like the original version, the updated Cambridge-Stratford Study Skills
course is primarily designed for middle, senior high school and entering
college students of varying ages (e.g. adults, etc.). The topics will
include content development, curriculum implementation, and instruction.
The course contains a pre and post study skills inventory that documents
the gains of students as they master the strategies. The “hands
on” practice and self reflective applications included in the
class challenge students to participate actively and to engage the use
of new skills, apply the skill and discover its effectiveness via electronic
discussion, and participation. Finally, each course is sequential and
learning is cumulative.
Unlike traditional study skills classes this electronic version enables
the user to teach and learn in a variety of educational settings. Class
emphasis is challenging, demanding, and intensive. It proves an enrichment
for anyone wishing to learn how to study so that they can study to learn.
The course can be taught by any instructor after completing the user-friendly
online teacher training. Built-in assessments allow for constant validation
of progress and a cumulative sequence of skills instruction. Each course
provides a clear picture of how all strategies are integrated into active,
everyday learning and life.

Name: Robin York
Presenter1 Institution: Chemeketa Community College
Presenter1 Bio: Robin came to Chemeketa in 1996 from Indiana University-Purdue University with training and experience in teaching developmental reading and study skills. Robin received certification from TIDE (Technology in Developmental Education) and has developed online reading classes and hybrid study skills courses. She offers staff workshops on running online courses and mentors colleagues as they learn the online process. Robin shares her findings at national conferences such as CRLA and the National Institute for Literacy. She has also taught study skills via Chemeketa Television.
Chemeketa has recently introduced a new designation for courses called DPR (Difference Power and Responsibility). This designation is only awarded to courses that submit evidence of how DPR can be incorporated into the curriculum. Robin was one of the first on campus to go through the training. She was able to achieve the designation for the transfer level study skills class. This happened because Robin is passionate about the subject of diversity and acceptance. She recognizes the importance of thinking about the “big ideas” even in a study skills class.
NWADE awarded Robin the Outstanding Educator Award in 2005. Since then
she has developed four hybrid advanced study skills classes and is currently
working on curriculum for a Math-Study Skills learning community. You
