40th Annual CRLA Conference - Portland, Oregon - Oct. 31-Nov. 3, 2007

1 Hour Pre-Conference Institute

Presentation Title:

Universal Instructional Design: A Focus That Helps All Students Learn

Presentation Description:

Universal Instructional Design (UID)comprehensively integrates into the basic course design and instruction principles and methods to provide equal access to learning for students with different learning styles, abilities and backgrounds. Its use removes most barriers to learning without sacrificing high academic standards. Handouts will be provided.

Institute/Session Summary:

The goal of this presentation is to disseminate information that will encourage faculty and institutions to consider the implementation of Universal Instructional Design (UID)to improve access and student learning. Attendees will learn the basic principles and methods
of UID and online resources for further study.

UID is a concept whose time is now. Some of the principles and methods are not so new taken alone; what is new is the comprehensive integration of those principles and methods into the basic course design and instruction. The holistic combination of different instructional methods, natural learning supports, use of technology to enhance learning, interactive learning, increased faculty-student contact, and a variety of ways to assess
student learning helps all students learn while meeting most student needs for accommodations. It better mainstreams students with disabilitites because most accommodations are included in the course design and instruction rather than "added on," and ultimately all students experience improved learning.
