40th Annual CRLA Conference - Portland, Oregon - Oct. 31-Nov. 3, 2007

1 Hour Pre-Conference Institute

Presentation Title:

Libraries and Tutorial Centers: Information Literacy as a Collaboratory Agent

Presentation Description:

Tutorial Centers and libraries share the common mission of providing meaningful learning opportunities for students. In those instances where there is no unifying structure to these services, however, students may become lost or confused. This presentation explores how integrating information literacy into tutor training can effectively improve student success.

Institute/Session Summary:

Libraries have a long and well established record of providing instruction to students, faculty, and organizational managers. Through workshops, course instruction, and one-on-one reference services, they have continuously introduced new strategies for identifying, finding, and utilizing information. Similarly, tutorial centers and other student support programs have become a foundation for students who need support and guidance.

At a time when immediate access to information is a click away, however, librarians find that students can be overwhelmed, confused, and unable to make use of the resources available to them. While tutors know that being able to find and use information can make the difference in student success, they, too, often lack a complete understanding of information literacy skills and their usefulness in teaching.

This presentation has several outcomes:

  • To establish the connections between library instructional services and tutorial centers
  • To investigate how libraries and other academic support services can collaborate
  • To define information literacy in terms of student success
  • To illustrate how information literacy can be integrated into courses or programs
  • To describe how the California State University Fresno Learning Center incorporated information literacy into tutor training
