Students can improve their reading and critical thinking skills and increase their knowledge base in academic courses through the use of newspaper articles. To raise student achievement, instructors can use activities culled from informative and interesting articles with national/international, state, regional, local, specie interest and historical orientations.

The presenters will demonstrate a variety of effective strategies used to incorporate newspaper articles in paired reading with content courses. They will solicit active audience participation in the interactive discussion and demonstration. They will also provide handouts to participants.

Presenter1 Bio: Victoria M. Rey is the coordinator of Developmental Reading and an assistant professor at Kean University, Union, New Jersey. She holds an Ed.D... M.A. in Teaching Reading, M.A. in Education and a Certification for Developmental Education.

Presenter2 Institution: Kean University
Presenter2 Bio: Roberta Karstadt is an assistant professor at Kean University in Union, New Jersey. She is a former curriculum specialist and a reading resource teacher with Newark, New Jersey Public Schools. She holds an Ed.D. and an M.S. from Yeshiva University and an M.A. from Seton Hall University.
