40th Annual CRLA Conference - Portland, Oregon - Oct. 31-Nov. 3, 2007

1 Hour Pre-Conference Institute

Presentation Title:

Focus on Learning—Together

Presentation Description:

This discussion session is your opportunity to present topics, challenges, or problems that participants can respond to with suggestions, solutions, or best practices that work! Last year's participants in the "Best Practices" session suggested a shift in focus to: I have a problem. Do you have a solution? Are these topics you would like to discuss: Coming to class more prepared, improving proofreading skills, using better review strategies, increasing motivation, or adding interest to classroom instruction. Linda Wong will facilitate.

Institute/Session Summary:

Purpose:

To provide participants with a discussion format to discuss instructional or classroom problems/challenges, and to share best practices and solutions to classroom problems they face.  With the intensity and abundance of sessions that involve learning new information and strategies, this session provides a balance by providing an opportunity to "be the speakers" and actively participate with others.

Learning Objectives:

  1. To share expertise and effective classroom practices
  2. To provide an opportunity to network with other faculty members

Outline:

  1. List discussion topics/problems participants would like to discuss
  2. Provide handouts for participants to list suggested strategies
  3. Moderate the discussions
  4. Collect the handouts, compile them, and make them available via email after the conference.

Theoretical Basis/Significance/Relevance: Classroom instructors continuously experiment with delivery options and classroom strategies that effectively meet their needs. Through their "tried and true" practices, others can acquire new skills that have already been classroom tests.

Engaging the Audience: Participants will:

  1. Pose discussion topics
  2. Share information
  3. Summarize suggestions for distribution later.

Experience with the Topic:

I facilitated the "Best Practices" discussion format at last year's conference. The feedback was positive.  I compiled all the suggestions and made them available to participants after the conference via email.  The response was excellent; many participants emailed their appreciation for the materials.
