This workshop is designed to assist participants in acquiring pre-requisite skills necessary for developing culturally responsive learning environments. The presentation addresses the importance of attitude, perspective, and knowledge in designing culturally responsive learning environments. It also discusses research-based strategies for developing such environments for tutoring, instructional, and learning assistance programs.

Name: Barbara Bonham
Presenter1 Institution: Appalachian State University
Presenter1 Bio: Barbara Bonham is the Senior Researcher at NCDE and a faculty member for the Kellogg Institute. She is Coordinator of the Higher Education Graduate Program and Professor in the Department of Leadership and Educational Studies. Barbara has taught twelve years in the field of developmental education at Bloomsburg University as a math instructor, lab coordinator, tutorial supervisor, and assistant to the Director in a Student Services Program. She has over 30 years teaching experience and has served as consultant to numerous colleges and universities, Boards of Higher Education, and to business and industry. She has also conducted workshops and keynote presentations at state and national conferences. Her publications, presentations, and areas of research interest include learning styles, program assessment and evaluation, instructional design, teaching and learning in postsecondary education, and adult learning. She earned a Ph.D. in Instructional Systems Design from the Pennsylva

Presenter2 Bio: Hunter R. Boylan is Director of the NCDE, a Professor of Higher Education, and former Director of the Kellogg Institute. He is a past President of the National Association for Developmental Education and the current Chairperson of the American Council of Developmental Education Associations, and the Principal Investigator for the National Study of Developmental Education. He also directed the nation's first doctoral program in developmental education at Grambling State University. He has more than a decade of practical experience working with learning centers, developmental programs, and TRIO Programs. He has published three books and authored or coauthored 81 articles, monographs, and book chapters. He has also delivered more than 120 presentations at regional, national, and international conferences.

Presenter3 Bio: Barbara Calderwood is the Assistant Director for Publications at the NCDE. In this role she serves as Editor/Advertising Director for the Journal of Developmental Education and Coeditor for Research in Developmental Education. She is past faculty for Advanced Kellogg and conducts "mini-session" for Kellogg participants as interest dictates. Since joining NCDE staff in 1987, she has conducted numerous authorsÂ’ workshops and strives to assist authors in developing their skills at writing for publication. She has also presented at CRLA, NADE, and NCLCA.
