"I began cross training (swim-bike-run) in Alaska back in the 80's and participated in various races around the lower 48 including Ironman Triathlon." Injuries, family priorities, and being lazy got me away from working out for about 10 years. About three and a half years ago, I was having medical issues, (bad back, blood pressure and weight problems). My "tough love" doc laid it out for me on what needed to be done. Starting from scratch, I began to put myself back together with fitness and diet. Slowly I was able to increase my fitness level from horrible to pretty good. Of course as the weight came off the finess level increased. Cross training has enabled me to develop (and not get bored) a soiid fitness training schedule that balances out with family life and work. Through heart rate monitoring I was able to gian control of my life again. I went from walking a mile to being able to recently participate in a 12 hour night time endurance run/walk at the McDowell Mountain Park completing 30 miles 8.5 hours. So what did I have to give up? Junk food, especially Whataburger! My philosophy is to take it one day at a time and be true to your self. Your never to old to start or revisit times gone by. |
